We all get lost sometimes. But unfortunately, then we have to stop and ask for directions. And realistically, who wants to admit they need help with anything? After all, we are a society that is ‘In Control’! Or so we like to think and convince others anyway. Having everything mapped out to the T really helps, but then you have to try to read the map as you are driving. Paper maps are more and more becoming a thing of the past. Really, who can drive and read those big things?

A co pilot can be helpful, if they are in a good enough mood and they want to help you. But then again that is giving up control to a certain level, too. Of course you could always print out the directions and have them on a smaller paper. But then you have to take your attention off the road for that too.

There is the fly by the seat adventure. You know, where you save it all in the memory banks of the old noggin’. Of course that leads us back to where we started, getting lost and stopping to ask for directions. Good new at last! No longer to you have to ask, pre plan, or admit that you need help.

Now we have a little helper called the GPS. Why do you need it?

GPS is called a global positioning system, and what it does is extremely helpful, even life saving at times. Just about anywhere you are these days if you have a GPS capable device you can see where you are on a map, and get directions. If that isn’t interesting enough, others (who you decide) can find you as well, with Internet programs that are hooked up to your device.

GPS is complex technology, but understanding it can be pretty easy. It is a satellite based navigation system that consists of a network of 24 orbiting satellites. It is an in car navigation and precise positioning device, like giving every square meter on the planet a unique address. A GPS is just the thing to keep you out of hot water and on the track during your trips. It can show you your exact position on earth at any time anywhere and in any weather. The GPS was developed by the department of defense in 1973. Originally, as with many of our technical gadgets, it was designed to assist our military with their vehicles to determine accurate locations world wide. These neat little tools can be used in airplanes, boats, cars and other recreational vehicles. Even scientists can use the GPS devices for weather forecasting and global climate studies. It also provides precise time reference for earthquake studies and synchronization of telecommunication networks. In 1983, President Reagan made the system available for civilian use. Since then the GPS has become widely used worldwide.

The devices are usually cell phones, smart phones, PDA’s (personal data assistants) and, or, the systems you can have installed into your vehicle, as a mapping service. Some vehicles are already coming pre-installed with GPS devices, and companies such as On Star use GPS to locate you and stay in contact with you while you are driving. This is very handy for car accidents when it is difficult to call for help.

If you are wondering why you would need GPS there are a few different reasons. If you have a bad sense of direction and you get lost very easily you would find a GPS device very useful for your vehicle. It can not only show you where you are, but it can give you directions to where you want to go. Many can even speak to you as you are driving and tell you how long before your next turn, or when you should be merging into a new lane. GPS is like a map that can almost read your mind and give you turn by turn help getting to where you want to go.

Another reason you might want GPS is for the cell phone teen or kid you have. With this kind of cell phone you can find them if they are lost, and you can find them or watch them to see if you can trust them, by use of an online program.

GPS is also good for lost cell phones, stolen vehicles and or kidnappings. Now GPS can also be used to track down animals that are lost, with many vets injecting animals with microchips that are tracked if the animal is ever reported missing. There is a little controversy about humans being tracked by the use of GPS. Many people feel it is an invasion of their privacy, but for the most part right now it isn’t too much of a concern. For cell phones, you have to turn the GPS on to be tracked, and for the vehicle, it is completely up to you if you want to get this kind of system or not.

In the long run, there is a lot to be worked out about how people will be tracked by the use of GPS, as far as the average citizen, a criminal or a child. There are reasons it would be helpful and reasons it could be used in negative ways as well.

You will have to make up your own mind about the use of GPS, but if you ever get lost, or have a missing cell phone, remember this system could be very helpful in getting you or your found to where you want it to be, and there are several devices you can choose from to begin being tracked.
