There are two successors of DVD players HD player and Blu ray player. HD player is the standard successor of DVD format and it is designed to store high definition videos. HD player data layer is .6mm below the surface to prevent any damage to the disks. There is a hybrid format of DVD known as Combo dual disk which has DVD in one side and HD DVD in the other sides. Both the sides have two layers. HD DVD provides high fidelity experience of video files.

HD DVD has used advanced encryption technology. So a normal user need not worry about safety of the files. It supports variety of resolution from low resolution to high resolution. Toshiba is the first one to release DVD as HD DVD.

Blu ray player is another successor of DVD player that helps to store digital information. It uses blue violet laser to read or write files and therefore it is known as Blu ray players. More data can be stored in Blu ray than DVD format because DVD uses red laser. Blu ray player uses hard protective coat on the surface from where the data is read. This will help to prevent contamination and scratches in the disk.

Blu ray player has greater compatibility to read CD’s also. Popular DVD player manufactures like Sony, Toshiba and Philips use both blu ray and HD DVD format in their products. Compared to HD DVD Blu ray has larger storage capacity with %0 GB whereas HD DVD has only 30 GB storage capacity.

Even though there are many differences between Blu ray and HD DVD, both tends to provide high quality video files. They will not trace pirated copies of video files. Already Toshiba and Sony are using the combination of Blu ray and HD DVD format in their products. It may be possible that either of the two formats can not succeed the DVDs. This is because the storage capacity is growing larger than that of optical disks. But the hard disk drives are costlier than optical disks. So the successors can not be removed from the market.
