Projector bulbs (more commonly known as projector lamps) are not your average light bulb. They are certainly not as cheap! Many people make the mistake of thinking their projector bulb/lamp will cost a dollar just as their regular light bulbs do. Unfortunately this is not the case!

Almost all projectors use a metal halide source which is a very bright white light. Older projectors use halogen lights. Although these are cheaper, they are not as good as the metal halide.

The average cost for a replacement projector bulb is $500. They can however reach over $700, depending on the type, brand and model.

The reason why projector bulbs cost so much is because they are very sophisticated. They need to be able to produce extremely bright light and also much be well made to last for some time.

It is a complicated process assembling projector lamps and surprisingly, most manufacturers do not produce them in mass quantities. This is another reason for their high price. There have been times where I’ve had a bulb on order for several months before being able to get my hands on it.

For this reason it’s a wise idea to purchase a spare bulb when buying your projector. That way you will have a spare in case of emergencies. You can also ask for a discount on the bulb since you are buying a projector at the same time. Many stores will be willing to do this for you.

You are probably wondering how often you’ll have to spend all this money replacing your projector bulb. The latest models should last for over 4000 hours. That’s a lot of projector time. Therefore it really depends how often you use the projector. If you are using it for 8 hours everyday, then you’ll obviously be replacing the lamp more often than someone who only uses it once per week.

Excessive projector heat can reduce the life of the bulb. Most projectors have specific instructions for powering down the projector to best minimize heat. Consult your manual for this information as it could save you money in the long run.
