If you are looking for a light compact camera the Nikon D300 is not for you. In fact the D300 is large and heavy, weighing over two pounds when batteries are inserted. This camera is definitely not for the casual user. It is too complex to be used by someone who is not a serious photographer. In fact it offers twelve point three megapixels and is classified as being somewhere between a consumer and professional camera costing around eighteen hundred dollars.
One of the best features of the D300 is that it has many options for you to specialize the controls to you preferences. To give you a better idea of how much there is to this camera, it comes with a manual that is well over four hundred pages. The good thing is that the manual is very comprehensive and well organized.
Many of the buttons on the D300 can be programmed to handle other functions. This kind of fine tuning is very common throughout the controls on this camera. It becomes an important necessity to be able to use the fine tuning as the menu gets very complicated. Luckily you can take and organize the menus to fit your preferences; though it is a long and tedious task. The good thing is that the pictures you get are well worth the work.
There is also a feature that lets you take nine bracketed shots rather then the usual three to five. It also does a great job capturing hard, high contrast images. It is one of the few cameras in its class that can capture accurate color and brightness in pictures with large areas of snow, water, and sky.
The D300 is also a super fast camera. In burst mode it can take an amazing six frames per second. This is even faster with the external battery pack; at seven point five frames per second. This is a very useful feature when you are trying to capture a specific image.
The Nikon D300 is not the camera for someone who is on the run, wanting to just point and click. If you are seriously interested in photography it is well worth the time that it takes to learn how to use and implement all of the features. You will not be disappointed with the images that are captured with the D300. The color is natural and the focus is crisp making for beautiful natural results.
