Lithium ion batteries in the recent two decades have acquired stability and are trusted to be one of the significant batteries in and out of the laboratory. The lithium ion batteries are found to be far better than the nickel cadmium batteries that possess only half the density of energy of lithium ion batteries and more over the nickel batteries need high maintenance than the lithium ion batteries. Moreover, the lithium ion batteries are less threatening when disposed than the nickel batteries to the environment.

The lithium ion chemistry is of two types namely, cobalt and manganese. To attain maximum runtime, the digital cameras, cell phones and laptops make use of cobalt based lithium ion. While, the manganese is the newest chemistry and it provides superior thermal resolution. It also sustains temperature up to 250 degree Celsius (482 degree Fahrenheit) before it becomes unstable. Apart from this, manganese has low resistance and hence can deliver high current. This is the significant reason that these are used in power tools as well as medical devices. It will be very soon used in electric and hybrid vehicles.

The lithium ion batteries should be preserved at temperatures under 77 degrees Fahrenheit. If the lithium ion batteries are preserved at higher temperatures, they lose almost 20 % of their capacity. Even during low temperatures, they lose nearly 5%, which in reality is lesser than other batteries. In fact if these batteries become excessively hot, they will get ruined. Manufacturers propose 59 degrees Fahrenheit as ideal storing temperature. You can also preserve lithium ion batteries in the refrigerator and give them enough time to warm prior to using it. The weakness of lithium ion batteries is they deteriorate once they leave the factory, even in cases of proper storage. They last longer when they are used and should be avoided storing. Storing them at a low charge will cause death to them or will turn them perilous when recharged.

The consumer grade lithium ion batteries are tough to be charged below 0 degree Celsius. However, keeping in mind the safety precautions is essential. In normal situations, a lithium ion battery will power down if a short circuit occurs. The manufacturers also take utmost care even to prevent the infiltration of packs in the market and this they do by selling lithium ion cells to approved battery assemblers. As lithium ion batteries have high potential, the energy of few lithium based cells are five times more than any lead acid cell and thrice more than alkaline batteries. The prominence of lithium ion batteries is increasing owing to its lighter weight, lower costs and high as well as stable voltage profile.
