Lithium Batteries
Lithium is a great reactive alkali metal. Lithium reacts if it is left open in the moist air. If lithium is combined with hydrogen, the water molecules present in the air turns the white metal into a black tarnish. This is one of the reasons that lithium is stored in pure state. It is stored in oil to avoid reacting. Lithium is highly flammable and so when it is burning, throwing water will make it burn aggressively. Lithium should be doused with other special chemicals to extinguish the flames. Lithium is a light weight metal and this is one of the significant feature besides having abundant potential energy. These two features make Lithium the prime metal to be used in batteries.
The feature that lithium is exceedingly reactive is a negative point for the battery manufacturers. Lithium batteries used in computers have literally ignited it owing to their high reactivity. Lithium batteries discharge lots of heat and are known for self-combusting. Yet, lithium is widely used as its advantages outweigh the disadvantages and the technology is progressing at a rapid race. As these batteries are lighter and powerful, these batteries are used in more fuel efficient hybrids. They are developed in lesser time as well and so people have begun targeting at reducing both, size and the cost.
Lithium batteries perform very well in all the temperatures even when the temperature falls below zero degrees Fahrenheit. However, it possesses the highest amount of life cycle and the self-discharge rate is very low. The charge time is rapid and so does not suffer from memory effect. But there is a possibility of permanent damage if these lithium batteries are stored at very low discharge level. So it is essential to keep these batteries very well charged. These start to degrade the moment they leave your factory. So before purchasing, check the manufacturers date printed on the batteries.
The lithium batteries have found to be effective and less defective. Moreover, these lithium batteries come in packs containing rolled up metal strips. This is to avoid from any disaster such as short circuit or overheat. However, battery failures occur due to faulty cell design, if it is manufactured in uncontrolled processes, they can be abused which implies accidental abuse that are unavoidable such as dropping, immersion in fluid, penetrating, crushing, contacting with fire or freezing. Observing various beneficial factors lithium batteries are in great demand in almost all the objects.
