LCD Projectors
LCD projectors are a self contained projector unit which has three liquid crystal display panels. LCD projectors have a high intensity light source and are available in a large number of sizes and specifications.
It can be a little daunting choosing the right LCD projector, so it pays to do your research first so you can gather a basic understanding of what to look out for when purchasing one of these projectors.
You will most likely come across another type of projector called a DLP projector. DLP stands for Digital Light Processing. These projectors process light in a different way to LCD projectors so it is important to work out which one will suit your needs best.
LCD projectors generally display brighter than DLP models, however LCD can also be limited to shorter usage periods due to their transmissive design. You can use LCD projectors for around 10 hours per day maximum. If it is operating for longer than 10 hours you will notice a depreciating image. This is due to the heat that is generated from the light source. This heat causes a loss of image quality.
If you plan to use your projector for much longer than eight to ten hours per day then you should be looking at a DLP projector rather than a LCD projector.
With that said however, LCD has its advantages. LCD is much better than the old CRT based projectors. LCD comes out on top of CRT in all areas including size, weight and brightness.
To ensure your LCD projector lasts a long time you should undertake a filter cleaning routine. You can hire someone to do this or you can do it yourself. This should be done every 100-300 hours of projector use. The projector will have a sponge or cloth intake filter which will need to be blown with canned air (or in some cases run under water and allowed to dry).
If you don’t clean the filter then you your LCD projector will have a shorter than normal life expectancy due to overheating.
In addition to these minor services, your LCD projector will need to be professionally cleaned every two years. This is an internal clean which aims to remove small bits of dust which can show on the projected image. This procedure also allows airflow and cooling to continue in the projector. This undoubtedly extends the life of your projector.
It is much cheaper to correctly maintain your projector rather than having to replace it every few years due to lack of maintenance.
