When buying a home theater projector there are several factors you need to consider.
Once you understand the basics of home cinema projectors then you are in a position to make an informed decision when shopping around for an ideal model.

Of course there are other factors to consider but for the everyday purchaser you really only need to consider the basics.
Price
Good projectors range in price from $1500 right up to over $8000. For the home user, a cheaper model usually will suffice.
If you are after one of the lower range models, consider the Mitsubishi HC3, BENQ PB6100 or the Epson Powerlite Home 10.
The Epson Powerlite Home 10 is an excellent entry level home theater projector and has great widescreen features.
At the other end of the price spectrum is the Sanyo PLV-WF10.This model is not suitable for small rooms and small screens. It also has a loud fan. One for the serious buyer only!
Brightness
ANSI lumens is the measure of brightness for home theater projectors. 700-2000 lumens is the regular range. Your brightness needs will depend on the environment where you are viewing video. If you have a dedicated, dark home theater then you won’t require as much brightness as a room which has a light source such as a window.
1000 lumens is sufficient for a dedicated home cinema room. Low ambient lit rooms need around 1200 lumens and high ambient lit rooms need 2000 lumens.
Aspect Ratio
Projectors come in two aspect ratios. They are the 16:9 aspect native wide screen ratio or the 4:3 aspect ratio. Aspect simply refers to the ratio of width and height of the picture.
Neither is better than the other, it all depends what you are using the projector for.
Many DVD’s these days come in 16:9 widescreen format whilst gamers may prefer 4:3 aspect ratio.
A home cinema projector is an exciting purchase and a costly one, so make sure you do your homework before making a final decision.
