Though today, the DVD technology has a hold on the market and prices are as low as $30, a new technology- High Definition DVD is going to come in the market. Some markets have already witnessed its upcoming.
You can definitely play your normal DVD on a high definition (HD) DVD player, but the disk can’t take advantage of HD’s extra resolution. The HD TV offers you the resolution of 1920×1080 compared to 720×480 of DVD’s. The features of HD DVD are high resolution video and audio, and the increased capacity. It is possible to fit an entire period of a television show into one disc.
The companies are bringing high definition disks with 10 times the capacity of normal DVD’s i.e. 50 GB per disk. The drive uses blue lasers than red to burn the disks. The shorter wavelength of blue laser (405 nm compared to 650 of red laser) makes focusing possible on a small (or tighter) spot of the disk and compresses more data in the DVD.
HD provides large amount of storage space. The amount depends on the compression ratio and quality of video. The HD DVD holds around 2 hours of HD video.
The war between DVD formats has just now begun. 13 Companies including Dell, Hewlett-Packard, LG Electronics, Philips, Hitachi, Matsushita, Pioneer and Sony have supported Blu- Ray format, while Toshiba and NEC are supporting HD-DVD format. The first generation of Blu-ray discs has a capacity of 23 GB and the HD-DVD has a capacity of 20 GB. A number of compression algorithms have been suggested for increasing capacity. The Microsoft has used one form in the Windows Media 9.
The HD-DVD can get support from Hollywood if Microsoft supports this technology. The HD-DVD’s have the same thickness as normal DVD’s. Hence, companies can produce the discs on existing equipments. This is the advantage of HD-DVD’s over Blu-Ray’s.
At present, there are no available computer systems to play some of the sample high definition disc. But after the arrival, most 2.8 GHz or higher computers can play back high definition content, although the highest resolution movies may require a faster computer.
