Camcorders have been around for approximately 35 years. In that time they have changed in many ways.
Video cameras started out using VHS tapes and Betamax tapes. They were great at the time. But they were also big and bulky. The VHS-C was introduced to the public around the end of the 80s It was great because you could take the tape directly from the camera and put it straight into a cartridge that is the same as a VCR tape except you put the VHS-C into the center of it before putting into the VCR.
Made it easy for most all ages. It also allowed for the cameras to be made smaller. They were smaller but were only able to record a smaller amount at one time. They could hold approximately forty minutes at a time.
After the VHS-C the 8mm was introduced. It is also called Hi8 format. They are even smaller then the VHS-C and can hold more information. They have the ability to hold up to about 2 hours of memories one one tape. This also allowed the cameras to become even smaller in size and shape. They were more convenient in being able to use to record but when you wanted to watch them on tv you had to use cables to hook the camera directly to the tv. Which could be confusing to some people.
Next in line was the Digital and Mini DV cameras that allowed better picture and ever smaller size while allowing longer taping times. Some are able to hold around 3 hours of viewing on one tape. They have been available for about 10 years now and these are still one of the most used type of cameras today. They are also easy to copy for viewing and store your events.
Now we also have the DVD and Hard drive cameras to use. With the DVD cameras you can record directly onto a DVD and take it out and watch what you recorded. And the Hard drive stores your information until you download it to your computer or they may also have a disk to be able to take with you to share your recordings with others. The DVD is a great way to go but you cannot record as much as you can with the Hard drive cameras. The Hard drive cameras also allow you to record more before you have to download your information.
You just have to decide on what your needs are and then pick the best one to suit your needs.
