There are 4 main formats used by camcorders today. They are:

1. Mini-DV
2. DVD
3. Hard Disk
4. Memory Stick

Some of these formats work about the same and some are very different.

A MinDV camcorder works by recording your video onto a Mini-DV tape. They very small about the size of the palm of an average sized hand. They may be little but can record a lot. You can buy tapes the can record 60 to 90 minutes of video. But the longer the video the lower the quality of sound. You may not have good results if you try playing it in another camcorder it will play best in your original one. It may be the best choice for usage if you are wanting to be able to do editing on your computer it will maintain a higher video imagery.

If you choose to use DVD formated camcorders you will need to purchase 8mm DVDs. These DVDs are the same as regular DVDs just smaller in size. They will still fit into most DVD players and DVD Roms in computers for easy transfer. When using these disks you can normally only record about 20 minutes per disk maintaining high quality video. You can also use dual layer disks in some camcorders which can sometimes double your recording time.

There are 5 main kinds of Disks available for camcorders such as: DVDR,DVD-RW,DVD R,DVD RW and DVD-Ram. They are all slightly different in the features they have available.

When you use the Hard Disk camcorders they are usually lighter in weight and smaller in size because they do not require and disk or tape for recording. A Hard Disk camcorder usually offers you 30GB size or larger. These camcorders offer larger amounts of recordings before having to download. Most offer at least 7 hours of video recording time. They also offer high quality video and can easily be transferred to a computer or DVD Recorder.

The use of a Memory Stick offer a lot of other options for the user. You can remove the card to transfer or just take along with you to share with other people. They are normally one of the smallest camcorders in size, but offer some of the highest quality available. There is a down side as they disks can be costly.

You can research and ever go to stores and try camcorders to see which one you like best and which one will be the easiest for you to use.
